A new tradition has taken hold in Esparto! Graduating seniors gather on the Tuesday before graduation to walk through the halls of the elementary school, surrounded by the cheers and high fives of former teachers, younger family members and proud parents. This event came about in an effort to inspire younger students to think about their future in a positive way. Mrs. St. Andre asked the graduates to raise their hands if they had attended Esparto Elementary, and when over 95% of them raised their hands, the crowd gasped. It highlights the continuity of our small community and how these traditions can have a real impact on students' perceptions of what they can achieve!

Jesse Salinas, the Yolo County Chief Election Official and his team were on campus on May 25 to assist the student body in electing officers for the 2017-2018 school year. As part of this effort, the election officials created real ballots as used in county and state elections, student candidates adopted slogans and students voted as if in a real polling booth.   During election day students also were able to register to vote.

After all the votes were cast, seniors were invited to watch the ballots being counted and learned how election officials handle ballots with errors, or ballots that are marked incorrectly.

Dear Parents,

Several children in our school have been sick with a stomach illness. The symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and/or fever.

What should parents do?

·        If you or your child develops these symptoms, keep them at home until they are no longer vomiting, experiencing diarrhea and/or fever and nausea. They must be free of symptoms for 48 hours before returning to school.

·        Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after contact with vomit or stool. Hand sanitizer can be used if no water is around. However, it is not a replacement for using soap and water.

·        Clean all areas that have come in contact with diarrhea or vomit. Use a ten percent bleach solution (5 teaspoons to one cup of water) or a disinfectant that kills viruses.

·        Notify the school and tell them your child’s symptoms

·        Consult with your doctor and let them know that other students at your child’s school have these symptoms. The doctor may want to take a sample of your child’s stool.

·        Contact the school if you have more questions.

·        Fluid is lost in diarrhea and vomiting. Make sure your child is able to drink fluids. If your child becomes weak or is unable to drink fluids, seek medical care.

Estimados Padres,

The Career and Technical Education Incentive Grant serves to help teachers and students develop partnerships with local organizations and businesses to provide real-world field experiences for students.  The CTE Culinary Arts program students have been working in a professional kitchen developing their skills as chefs. The students spent two days at the Lake County campus of the Woodland Community College working alongside college students and professors serving lunch in the campus restaurant. Students prepped food as sous chefs, manned deep fryers and woks, expedited orders, read recipes and participated in all other aspects in the "back of house" at a restaurant. Teresa Warde, EHS Culinary teacher, and Robert Cabreros, from WCC, are working together to create more opportunities like this for students. Through this partnership students will attend a Serv Safe Certification course and will receive college credit for completion of the course.
